25 July 2006: V for Vendetta on DVD
from Slice of Sci-FiThe thought-provoking thriller about a totalitarian future Britain is about to arrive on DVD.
V For Vendetta tells the story of a young woman named Evey, played by Natalie Portman, who is rescued from the abuses of a totalitarian state by masked avenger V (Hugo Weaving). Hidden behind a Guy Fawkes mask, V is attempting to ignite a revolution against the corrupt rulers of Britain. Evey - and the detectives trying to track them both down - uncover the sad truth about V’s mysterious background.
From Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers, creators of The Matrix trilogy, it’s based on the amazing graphic novel by Alan Moore first published in the 1980s.
You can read an interview with Moore about his latest work in SFX issue 147. Coincidentally, that hits the shops a few days after V for Vendetta is available to buy on DVD (31 July). It will be available as a single DVD and a two-disc Special Edition.
The single disc DVD will include “Freedom! Forever! Making V for Vendetta” – a piece in which the cast and crew reveal the filmmaking process.
The Two-Disc Special Edition DVD release will be exclusive to HMV and will include that piece as well as a trailer and these additional items:
"Designing the Near Future" – a look at the artistic process of creating the frightening future world of V.
"Remember, Remember: Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot" - the history behind the story of Guy Fawkes.
"England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave in Comics" – the origins of the original V story discussed.12 June 2006: Sydney Bells Toll for Weaving
from Sydney Morning HeraldHugo Weaving, whose beard is again massive and untamed, has returned to one of his favourite roles: publicly supporting local theatre and film events in Sydney.
Weaving was among the star-crossed lovers watching Bell Shakespeare's production of Romeo And Juliet at the Opera House on Thursday night.
He joined in the enthusiastic applause for the play, which carried on through three encores. (All credit to director John Bell and the cast for a great production.)
Weaving was then scheduled to walk on the red carpet at the opening of the Sydney Film Festival on Friday night, to watch Ten Canoes.
After the impressive box-office success of V For Vendetta, with Weaving starring opposite Natalie Portman, the actor is now considering a range of scripts, such is the demand for his services in Hollywood.
But, charmingly, he seems perfectly content taking a bit of time out in Sydney.
