Who, What, Why?
The webmiss of this site is Cat, aka Ariah. I created it to indulge my ever-growing obsessions with a) Elrond, b) The Lord of the Rings and Middle-earth in general, c) building websites. And yes, I'm a big fan of Hugo Weaving too. Although I've been a fan of Tolkien's books for many years, I was a fan of Frodo and hobbits first, but became more and more interested in the elves on later readings and again when I saw the movies. Among the elves, Elrond's story seems to me especially poignant, in part because he is also kin to the world of humans; this aspect of his character, and the key position which it gives him in the history of Middle-earth, also made him particularly interesting for me.
The phrase 'Shadows of Twilight' comes from the description of Elrond in The Fellowship of the Ring. (See the LotR quotes page for the full quote.) Although in its original context it describes Elrond's appearance, I thought the phrase could evoke something of the mystery and melancholy that surrounds the elves in general and Elrond in particular.
All written content - biographies, histories etc - was compiled originally for this site, and individual sources of information are quoted as appropriate. Please do not copy it or quote from it without giving credit. In research for the site, I have referred primarily to The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales and selected volumes of the History of Middle-earth Series. The Encyclopedia of Arda and The Council of Elrond also provided some useful pointers in the search for information.
Since 1 August 2008 this site has also been the home of the Elrond fanlisting. As the name implies, a fanlisting is basically a list of people who are fans of a particular subject. It is open for fans from all around the world to join, and can be a way of finding others online who share your interests. For more information, visit thefanlistings.org, the original online fanlistings directory.
